Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tbsp turbinado sugar

Directions

  • Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease 9×5 inch loaf pan with spray or butter.

  • Step 2

Add butter and brown sugar to a large bowl. Use an electric hand mixer or standing mixer to cream together butter and brown sugar until well combined, about 4-5 minutes.

  • Step 3

Add molasses, eggs and vanilla to sugar and butter mixture and beat until well combined.

  • Step 4

Sift together all purpose flour, whole wheat flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and salt.

  • Step 5

Slowly add the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the wet ingredients and beat on the lowest speed until completely combined.

  • Step 6

Using a rubber spatula to scrape the bowl, pour the mixture into the prepared loaf pan. Spread evenly and sprinkle turbinado sugar on top.

  • Step 7

Bake for 45-50 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
